Satan persecutes the woman who gave birth to the child, which must
refer to the remnant of Israel, the believing Jews. We see that Israel is
nourished for 3 1/2 years in the wilderness. The metaphor of fleeing on the
wings of eagles, the flood from the dragon's mouth, and the earth opening to
swallow the flood are open to multiple interpretations. Do the wings of eagles refer
to an airborne evacuation into the wilderness? How could Satan cause a flood
that would threaten people flying to the wilderness? Or if this is later, would
Satan be able to cause the weather to produce a flood like the one in Noah's
day that would drown people living in the wilderness? Or perhaps a dam could be
destroyed that would release an enormous amount of water below it? Some have
suggested that the Jews might flee from the antichrist to Petra in the
wilderness. As this is in the Wadi Araba, it is inhabitable because of a
perennial stream. Although it is prone to flash floods, these are controlled by
a series of dams. Alternatively, perhaps this is a metaphorical flood of
demons. What seems unambiguous is that
after the supernatural protection of Israel, Satan's rage is further inflamed
and he turns his focus to Christians.
